How Couples Counseling Helps

Real tools for real relationships

Even healthy couples hit conflict, distance, and ruts sometimes. Couples counseling isn't about fault — it's about giving you both better tools, deeper understanding, and a path forward you can walk together.

Communicate with fewer walls

Practical, repeatable tools to break recurring patterns of conflict and finally feel heard. We work on what actually happens in your house — not generic advice.

Rebuild trust & reconnect

Whether you're recovering from betrayal or just feeling miles apart, we map a structured way back to closeness — emotional, physical, and the day-to-day kind that sometimes fades.

Decide what's next, clearly

Stuck on commitment, parenting, careers, or whether to stay? You deserve a healthy space to think it through — and a counselor who helps you see honestly without pushing an agenda.

Wherever you are, we can start there

Most couples reach out because something feels off and they want it different — together.

Married couples

Communication, intimacy, financial stress, parenting differences, or recurring fights you can't seem to put to bed.

Affair recovery

A structured path through betrayal, broken trust, and unhealed past hurts — without sweeping anything under the rug.

Pre-marital & engaged

The "Starting Well" approach — think through finances, family, communication, and conflict styles before they become the problem.

Pat Ward, LPC-S

I'm Pat Ward, LPC-S, BC-TMH — a licensed counselor based in the South. I've been doing this work for years — over 10,000 clinical sessions with more than 1,000 clients, plus a long season as a pastor before that. Couples work is one of the parts of the practice I love most.

My approach is balanced and compassionate. I don't take sides. I bring research-backed tools, patience, and skills. I work with clients of all faiths and backgrounds, and I integrate a spiritual focus for those who want it.

Personally? I've been married for 20 years. We have three kids. We've faced all kinds of challenges together.

Reach out — even if you're not sure yet

Questions couples ask before reaching out

Honest answers — the kind you'd want before booking that first call.

What if my partner isn't sure they want to come?

That's incredibly common. One partner is usually a half-step behind the other in being ready. Reach out anyway, we can talk through how to make a first session feel safe and useful for both of you. If they're truly unwilling, there's also valuable individual work that can shift the relationship.

Do you take sides?

No. My whole approach is built on the idea that the relationship is the client. If one of you ever feels like the room is unfairly tilted, that's something we name out loud and adjust.

How does the 3-day private retreat actually work?

We start with a video intake call to understand where you are and what you're hoping for. Pat then designs a custom 3-day agenda — typically a mix of structured sessions, real conversation prompts, and intentional time for the two of you. Pat travels to your home or to a location you choose (a vacation place, a cabin, a quiet hotel). You handle lodging and meals; I'll handle the work. Follow-up sessions are available afterwards so the gains made during the retreat hold when real life begins again.

How much does the retreat cost?

Custom — quoted privately based on location, duration, and what you're working on. Travel and lodging are arranged separately so you stay in control of those choices. Most couples find it comparable to (or less than) what a public marriage retreat costs once you add up flights, hotel, and program fees. And it all happens with the added benefit of total privacy.

What about insurance?

The practice doesn't bill insurance directly, but provides Superbills you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Sliding scale is available in limited cases for genuine financial hardship — just ask.

How long does couples work usually take?

Honest answer: it depends. Some couples come for a focused 6–10 sessions on a specific issue. Others stay longer because the work keeps opening up new ground. We'll talk about pace and goals from the start so you're never wondering what we're doing or why.

Do you work with all faiths and backgrounds?

Yes. I work with clients of every faith and no faith at all. If you'd like spiritual conversation as part of the work, that's available. If you'd rather keep it strictly clinical, that's just as welcome.
